It has been said that “teaching kids to count isn't nearly as important as teaching them what counts.” Conceived by North Shore Day School Executive Director Jay Jacobs, the STARFISH Program is the cornerstone of our commitment to developing character.
Children will learn about each of these qualities through their entire educational experience—whether using Sportsmanship while playing games outside on the field, or learning Friendship while working on a project in Art Class with a classmate. Our teachers and staff incorporate these values in a way that helps children learn the lessons without seeming like they're being taught.
STARFISH is the core principle of North Shore Day School and North Shore Day Camp, as well as all the other members of the TLC Family of Camps.
The Eight STARFISH Program Values
SPORTSMANSHIP
Exhibiting appropriate conduct in healthy competition.
TOLERANCE
Recognition and respect for the opinions, practices, beliefs or behaviors of others.
APPRECIATION
The ability to recognize the achievements and contributions of others.
RESPECT
Consideration for others and appreciation of the individual importance of others equal to one's self.
FRIENDSHIP
The ability to build strong interpersonal relationships with others based upon mutual trust, sharing and support.
INTEGRITY
Demonstrating a firm adherence to the principles of honor and the sanctity of one's word.
SENSITIVITY
Consideration of others and concern for the feelings of others.
HELPFULNESS
The quality of cooperation and volunteerism to get needed tasks accomplished.
Two of Hampton Country Day Camp's counselors, Hallie Rose and Ben Wiley, decided to write a book, "STARFISH" based on their experiences as camp counselors at HCDC and with the STARFISH Values. Combining a wonderfully written poem by Hallie Rose and colorful illustrations by Ben Wiley, Hallie explains why they decided to start this project: "The simple act of spreading positive behavior can help build stronger character in our children and create better communities as a whole. A small act of kindness can make a big difference! Spread the STARFISH!"
